Was anyone else bothered by the two throwaway lines we got in 4x05 about Annie spending Thanksgiving with her family? I’m not sure if the writers simply forgot about the fact that Annie was disowned by her family when she decided to get treatment for her pill addiction, or whether we are supposed to develop an elaborate headcanon about how she was only cut off by her mother, yet remained on good terms with the rest of the family. Either way, I wish we could have gotten more than just a passing mention on it. Because right now, it feels like Annie’s past is once again swept under the rug for the sake of a few laughs.
Also, it pisses me off that it’s apparently okay to make objectifying jokes about Annie’s breasts, yet she’s still not allowed to have any kind of sexual agency this season. If the writers don’t want to follow through with Jeff/Annie, why not give her a new love interest, or let her - God forbid! - have sex? It looks suspiciously like the fetishization of a young, supposedly “innocent” woman. THAT is gross and creepy. Not letting her flirt with a 34-year-old guy after three years of build-up. But, as the conversation with Bobrow on Twitter proved, it seems that the writers don’t really take into account how a development of the J/A relationship would affect Annie. It’s all about projecting their own fear of being seen as creepy, old dudes onto Jeff’s character. Because that’s all that matters, right? That Annie is a 22-year-old woman who can make her own decisions about who she wants to date or sleep with conveniently gets ignored, as long as they can focus on Jeff’s manpain on how hard it is not to “take advantage” of the hot young girl who’s apparently still supposed to be seen as pining after him. Sigh.
